I know im not a master of anything- infact, its only been about a week since I started working on improving rather than appealing.
BUT BOY DO I FEEL GOOD ABOUT MY ART.
and you should too!

Tips on becoming the artist you want to be

✸ note that these are tips on how I've started- everyone is different! Learn however you want to learn!

1. STOP DRAWING ONLY FOR OTHERS AND JUST START DRAWING FOR YOU

Ok so this for me was the hardest step. I never ever drew for enjoyment. Even when I drew my characters I wasn't really having fun? What you should do is stop all commissions. Stop all trades. And give yourself one day to draw to make you happy. Even if you don't improve at all you will start loving your art! I know I do!

2. FIND ART THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY

What is better than finding a style that you really love? Than looking at all this art from people that inspires you? NOTHING. (okay maybe besides starbucks and kittens but still!)

when you find a style you love you should:
  • NOT COPY IT COMPLETELY (make it YOUR style!)
  • Figure out what you love about it
  • and incorporate that into your style
3.STUDY AND PRACTICE

for me I've found it hard to study more than one thing at a time. This week its been alot of paws and foxes and wolfs. I have been really into looking at anatomy and references.
REFERENCES ARE NOT CHEATING! USE THEM! Then practice practice practice.

4. LOVE YOUR ART

This is really important to remember:
YOU HAVE AMAZING ART. YOU ARE AN ARTIST. do not always try to draw perfectly- you will never get better!
Draw bad! JUST DRAW. Draw stickfigures and draw what you can't draw (for me its people) and just have fun!

A blackbelt in karate would never be a black belt if they stayed doing only what they could do. SAME WITH ARTISTS.

remember: you need to DRAW FOR YOU.

It won't be easy- I've gotten frustrated and annoyed this week when what I tried to draw wasn't working. But I have been really proud of what I've seen so far. I am now excited to draw! I LOVE IT. AND SO SHOULD YOU

Just a note but I think that subscribing to an art subscription box is a good way to motivate you to keep creating and it also opens you up to other art supplies that you don't normally use. I subscribed to Art Tarte (arttarte.co) and I'm loving it! I'm not just a watercolorist anymore!
